just beachy

together, originally uploaded by pilgrimgirl.

Last night John & I chased the sunset, arriving at the beach just moments before the sun sank into the horizon. We shared a picnic and enjoyed being outdoors together. I marveled that I was feeling well enough to even get to the beach--though I really only walked a few dozen yards from our parking spot to the tideline.

This morning I had a surgical follow-up appointment and was told that my wound had healed enough that I could cease debridement. I'm healing so much faster this time 'round than with any of the previous lancings/drainings of the wound. Everyone is very sure that "we got it this time" and that this is all behind me now.

I'm scared to be too hopeful yet, but let's just say that I'm actually making my reservation for the Exponent Women's Retreat in Boston today--working on the hope that I will actually be well enough in September to go. (for those of you who are local to Boston--where's the best teahouse/coffeehouse? Last time we were there we encountered a few late at night walking around Harvard, but didn't have time to try any of them.)

A few days ago I cut my hair--realizing that it had been months since I'd even had the energy to think about hair, face, etc. I'd not even had the strength to stand at the sink long enough to really brush my hair, much less consider style and/or blowdry. It's such a superficial thing, but it's really a thrill to notice the difference in how I feel--that I actually have the mental and physical stamina to get back into my own self-care routines.

Today the surgical nurse warned me that I'm going to have a pretty ugly indented scar on my leg for the rest of my life. I told her that that didn't matter to me as long as the infection was gone. Scars are of such little consequence when one is finally feeling better again!

I'm really happy to hear that you are doing SO MUCH better! Isn't it amazing when even having a scar is no big deal? Take the pain away and you can mess it up as much as possible.

I hope this continues to be the path to healing! Body and soul!

I hope you can make it to the retreat...if so, check out 1369 Coffee House at Inman Square in Cambridge (about a mile from Harvard Square). Some people really like Peet's Coffee in Harvard Square as well.

Fortunately, the retreat this year is just an hour from Boston - a little less hassle than in previous years. If you can attend, I hope to reserve a few minutes of your time to learn about how you and your husband have formed what looks like a loving and lively relationship...

I think that fast healing is all about having a good attitude and so much support. I mean, I am not saying you attitude stopped it from healing in the first place, but just that you seem to have been surrounded by so much support and hope this last time, and it has to do wonders for your immune system...

And you know what I think about scars... great place for some ink. But really I am just kidding, and it makes me smile a ton that you are healing so quickly.

I've got a fairly nasty scar on my shin from a childhood injury after I jumped out of a tree aiming to land on a nearby wall (don't ask...I was a tomboy and unafraid...ha!) My doctor spotted it a couple of months later when I was in hospital for my asthma and I got a lecture about how it clearly needed stitching if it was that bad (I didn't know, and my parents never said anything!)

Anyway a good pair of tights (hosiery) will cover the worst if needs be, and like you say being healthy is worth so much more!!! I'm so glad you seem to be mending well :-)

Oh and a sunset picnic....how romantic, I love that idea...(I'm dreaming really because the beach here in the North of England is COLD haha but perhaps that's an excuse to snuggle under blankets...?)

oh by the way I totally agree with Catbonny - scars are an ideal opportunity to get a great life story tattoo. You could get some beautiful flowers to always remind you of your gorgeous garden :-D

If you do, make sure you go to a recommended artist who has experience in tattooing scars. My tattoo artist has done several and it's amazing to see these people just burst into tears seeing something beautiful where once they'd felt it wasn't...awesome stuff. I think I'm going to do the same with the scar on my leg and get some gorgeous Hawaiian plumeria flowers (my faves).

Sadly, the other scar I have is on my forehead...

Another fantastic photo! And great news about the healed leg - as you said, the scar doesn't matter - it's a battle scar and you won! Hooray!
