to die for

Saw this sigfile on a message from an email list today:

Only two defining forces have ever offered to die for you:
1. Jesus Christ
2. The American G. I.
One died for your soul, the other for your freedom.

Wow. I don't know what the definition of a 'defining force' is, but I can think of other people who have put their life on the line for me--starting with my own mother on my birthday. And I don't know any American GI's who have ever personally offered to die for me. And, honestly, though I appreciate the unselfish sentiment of both Jesus and the GI, I'd rather they'd just live(d) their own lives rather than sacrifice themselves on my behalf. I can take care of my own soul and my own freedom, thank you.
