Oooooh.... mine's not that pretty, but I do organize my dining room wall of bookshelves by color--reddish shelf, white shelf, bluish shelf, greenish shelf, brownish shelf... It helps to find a book, because I can usually remember what the cover looks like, if nothing else.
Maybe just make dustcovers for your books in gorgeous colors? It would save the reorganizing... and you'd be able to choose the hues.
Aw, geez! That's hilarious. It also makes me panic a little.
I could never, ever find anything that way. Alphabet or nothin', baby. Besides, I have so many Penguin paperbacks that the resulting pattern would be seriously orange-heavy.

unless your library software could tell you what color the spine of a book was....hmmm.
