a thousand fibers

threads, originally uploaded by pilgrimgirl.

“We cannot live only for ourselves. A thousand fibers connect us with our fellow men; and among those fibers, as sympathetic threads, our actions run as causes, and they come back to us as effects.”

I often think that humanity resembles an egg carton. When viewed level with the edge of the carton, it looks like there are many separate groups, when viewed from above or below it's clear to see that we are all part of the same whole.
The egg carton analogy reminds me why there is no "us and them" but only "us," and provides me with a vivid image of why mistreatment and disrespect of any kind towards any other human or group of humans is so very very wrong.
