let's celebrate today (with a giveaway!)
There's so much good going on right now! It's time for some celebrating:
1) I've been aching to take some pictures, but just as I started feeling well enough to do so, my camera broke. John picked up a new one for me today, and let me tell you, the first few sample shots have me pleased (see the one above), even if I do still need to learn the bells and whistles. Speaking of which....my camera really needs a good name. For everyone who submits a name suggestion in the comments, I'll put your name in a hat for a DRAWING next Friday. The PRIZE will be any 8"x10" print that you'd like from my flickr feed--I'd suggest one of the garden pics, myself.
2) I'm healing well--no current signs of infection and I can get around pretty well without crutches now. I'm guessing that within the next week or so, I'm going to feel better than I have for many months (fingers crossed, knocking on wood, etc, etc, etc.)
3) Gradually, I've been getting to visiting many of your blogs. You people are so smart and interesting and cool! Thanks so much just for being you (queue Mr. Rogers' music...."because I like you just the way you are").
4) Today as I've puttered around the house a bit I've been overwhelmed by the love that's been showered on my family over the past few weeks. There are nummy foods from friends in the fridge, flowers on my table, handmade soap on my nightstand (that I will actually break open and use soon enough), colorful cards propped up on my sewing table, and a generous stash of dark chocolate in the cupboard. You all really know how to make me smile. Thank you.
PS: I'm not usually so sappy, but I'm just so happy to be feeling good again. Can you blame me? :)
UPDATE...
The camera is another powershot, very similar to my last one. I didn't say that right off the bat, because...well, it's a bit embarrassing to be using a camera like that when so many of my blogger friends have REAL cameras--like the rebel kinds with ginormous phallic lenses and stuff.
One of the reviews said "This is the kind of camera you buy for your Mum." So I guess you can now all call me Mum.
(but do note that it is a groovy shade of "Bohemian Brown," so that ups its coolness factor just a tidge)

by the way, what kind of camera is it?
Impossible to come up with a name without knowing what kind of camera you are enjoying. Also, I'm curious! Your photos are lovely.
see the UPDATE at the bottom of the post for the type of camera...
:)
and great names, btw!
I'm glad you're feeling better! I came here through Dooce, and I'm enjoying your blog.
As for your camera, my first thought was Sophie, but since it's a Powershot, how about Martina?
Or you could name it after a famous female photog, like Cindy (Sherman) or Annie (Liebowitz).
I am glad it is time for healing. You take beautiful pictures, which is a matter of eye more than camera. You have the eye.
It's one of the names I'm saving for a future bulldog (or mutt) puppy - how does Petunia sound?
Glad you're feeling much better. And so happy too.
How about "The Flasher"
or "Twinkles"
Canon Powershot. Hmmm.
Karma (from my Buddhist side)
By the way, I will never look at my ginormous phallic lenses in the same way again. Thanks, I think.
how about
Mumsy ?
In Greek mythology a cyclops is a member of a primordial race of giants, each with a single eye in the middle of its forehead.
Since your camera focuses and shoots from a single "eye" I say christen the new equipment Charlie Cyclops or Cyc for short.
ginormous phallic lenses....?!?
well fine, I'll just have to embrace that.
:)
I suck at names, but I second
Kristen's suggestions of Cindy (Sherman) or Annie (Liebowitz)
Congrats on getting better. (Knock on wood.)
If your blog is Pilgrim Steps, your camera ought to be John Wayne. :)
Or maybe John Bunyan.
(breathing huge sigh of relief) I'm so glad you're getting better! Does this mean you'll be going to Boston in September? I keep waiting for a dreaded announcement that you can't come.
My Grandpa, an English professor, had some scrub jays that would visit him daily and eat peanuts out of his hand. He named them things like Gregory Peck and Mary Pickford.
How about Clara Clickford? Louisa Click?
OK, that was retarded. I'm not quite as literary as Grandpa, nor as inventive as Dickens.
I'd forgotten that I resolved not to use the word "retarded" anymore. Sorry.
Since it's advertised as something you'd buy your Mum, I'm thinking British.
Mrs. Peel (Have to love a woman who could wear black leather like that AND kick the sh%^ out of the other spies...)
Eliza (or Elizabeth, if she seems a little more formal)
Penelope
Eleanor
Daphne
Juliette
Or maybe Bronwen, if she might be Welsh?
Getting up, if only for a little bit, must feel so GOOD.
SarahK:
I am hoping hoping hoping for Boston (it's hard to type with all of my fingers crossed over here...). I haven't made any reservations yet, but I still intend to go. Last year in Boston was pure magic. I need that again! :) [And for those of you who live in Boston or its environs--let's plan on a meetup somewhere groovy...details to come soon]
As to that word you used--I grew up using it and find that every once in awhile I still say it, too. Other words that I'm trying to eliminate from my vocabulary are "handicapped" and "lame" because they are offensive to many of my friends (and to me, too). It's not easy to do, though. But it's so empowering to be self-aware and to be changing. :)
I'm with "Suddenly Sixty." Before reading the comments I had decided that Cyclops was a good name (was thinking about the Cyclops in the Odyssey. However, because of their well-know temperament, I decided that I would have to be more specific. One of the first Cyclops, and one of those who forged tools for the gods was Brontes. I've decided that you should name your camera BRONTE: by dropping the s, divisive temperament is lost. Moreover, it is the surname of two of my favorite writers, who saw so clearly. Cyclopean vision is "the ability to see with two eyes information that is hidden from each eye alone."
The other name I would choose is Jane: for Jana, Austen, and Eyre.
Here's a rose for you, Jana.

Hmm...how about Penelope? Funny to see someone else naming their electronics. My husband's MP3 player was alwasy referred to as "Gary".

Interesting - you and I have the same camera - color and everything. It's a great camera; some of us don't need ginormous lenses. :)
And a name: Sarah
How about Brenda Starr? I haven't read her comic strip in many (many!!) years, but she struck me as a strong woman reporter, much like your camera.
female? you didn't specify.
Phoebe?
I too am enjoying a new camera and loving the freedom of expression it provides
I like Ruthie, and the idea of naming it tremendously
ginormous phallic lenses ~ tee hee, you know i get that a lot when i'm out with the 70-200, lol.
i heart the powershot ~ and like the name lucy :)
Twinkie
I wanted to pick out some really meaningful and arty name. Failed.
I'm going with Fred. Fred is nearly always a good name. George works too.
I think you should name her Janice.
Either that or Hedwig [hɛd̥vɪç] or Hedwige [ʔɛdviʒ] if you prefer the French pronunciation.
Among so many British-sounding names, I'm going to suggest my favorite Brit-lit name: St. John (pronounced "Sinjin").
How about Lucy, for light?
OK, can't think of anything really cool or appropriate for a camera, but really want to be in the draw, so how about Mem, short for memories? (Lame I know, but the best I can come up with!)
Ermintrude. Or Gertie. Gertie sounds flirty ;)
Mabel. Etta. Irene.
Mizz Snappy (kinda sounds like a southern belle drag queen) or if you like cheesy 1950 Japanese references there's always Gamera (the giant mutant turtle - see wikipedia for more info. :D )
I'm thinking Mabel (I swear I didn't steal it from Patti right above!)but it just looks like a Mabel to me). Or if you want a more modern name, I'm thinking Isabella (maybe Izzy for short??)
I learned about you through Dooce and I'm glad to hear that you're feeling better!
Yeah, so I like Snappy. If I ever was going to name a camera, that's what I'd name it. Snappy.
oh shoot. Snappy is taken... um. Then I'd have to go with Phil.
I think Flickie would be a good name for a camera. Not too creative, but it seems right to me. "What a lovely sunset... I better grab the Flickie."
Glad you are feeling better Jana!
~Kelly
I recently met a Pug with two moms who named him Brad, which is such a ridiculous name for a Pug. And now it's my favorite name ever.
Phil
Felicia
Joey Joe Joe Junior Shabadoo!
(*that's what I named my office fish...it never fails to make people laugh)
Can't wait to see your beautiful photos with the new camera, I adore the lovely flower shots you have already, so many stunning ones
Brownie. For so many reasons.

Discovered your blog a few days ago (via dooce, maybe?) and went back to the beginning, reading it when I should have been doing homework. (I'm back in school at 50ish doing what I've longed to do since forever ago.) I'm impressed with your writing and can see a nice evolution with your photography. Amazing that you use a Powershot!
Peace,
Deb
