garden rose

It was perfect gardening weather today. We wore shorts and pulled weeds. The earth was perfectly soft from the recent rains, so it was easy work. Now that I got a little dirt under my nails I am eager to get back in and finish the huge job of weeding (we had unbelievable growth from the recent rains!)...

Wow, that is very nice. I've tried rescuing roses and all I have recovered is the rootstocks, not the nice grafted roses that are meant to be seen.
I planted my shallots yesterday, but it's much too early to plant anything else except peas, whick I usually plant two weeks into April.
My lettuce seedlings are starting the first true leaves, and I have irises, daffodils, and the first 6 crocuses, but everything else is still bare here. I have several hundred crocus, daffodil, iris, and tulip bulbs, and it should look like spring here soon.
I know you like tomatoes, so here is what I am growing this year. All of these are heirloom tomatoes:
Tomatoes
Brandywine (OG)
Striped German (OG)
Wonder Light (OG)
Matt's Wild Cherry
Rose
Red Sun
plus whatever interesting tomato plants show in my favorite garden places
I grow a lot of other things, but lettuce is really important to me. I grow all the lettuce we eat from late April until the first frost that overpowes the cold frames. Here's what I have this year:
Adriana
Nancy
Fireball
Crispino
Saladbowl
Envy
Cocarde
Red Sails
Jericho
Outredgeous
Anuenue
Concept
Magenta
Crunchy Royale
Happy gardening!

I've had more success with rescuing roses than with the fancy-pantsy from-the-nursery roses. Not sure why, but I'm alays delighted with my rescuees. :)
Thanks for your tomato and lettuce list. I will definitely refer back to them and try some! Out of all of these I've only grown the Brandywine tomatoes (love them!). I've had mixed luck with salad greens (I usually lose them to the gophers and/or bunnies) but I'm determined to do better this year (gophers beware!!).
