Last week a friend (who shall remain nameless but has the initials of rjw), mentioned that cats were some of the pests that God had cursed the land with in our post-lapsarian world, I almost kicked him right in the middle of Sunday School. Fortunately restraint held out and my pacifist tendencies kicked in before my shoe actually made contact with the seat of his pants (he was sitting in the folding chair in front of me--giving me easy kicking access).
The irony of the moment is that 10 years ago--even 5 years ago--I may have made a similar comment. I can distinctly remember rolling my eyes when I found out that my sister Suz had a acquired a cat (the infamous Sir Stinky Winesalot). Wondering why she would keep such a creature in her house. To me it was just plain inconsiderate to those of us who are feline-allergic (which includes the bulk of our family). That seemed crazier than the snake she kept during college.

I do not share my husband's sentiments towards cats, but I do in fact have a sort of love/hate thing for them. I am also allergic, but I think they are adorable. I could also see myself getting attached to a feline in one of those one-sided relationships where I give lots of food and affection and receive little in return. Isn't that what cats are known for--their tolerance for humans who give them sustenance and amusement?

It's probably true that some cats are stingy with affection, but mine aren't. However, unlike dogs they aren't sitting at their master's feet always eager to fetch something. Cats have a bit more pride than that. They are affectionate on their own terms. In that way they're more human-like, I think.
Our cats love attention, but they also give lots of love. They purr madly, they love to curl up with anyone who is sleeping. They are much lower maintenance than dogs, and they smell much better (because they are absolutely fastidious about grooming--no slobbery dogbreath). They also have the softest, must-be-petted fur!
Hey, what do you mean by "slobbery dogbreath"? I may be the only one, but I think my dogs smell really good :)
